Riina Hannula has a Master's degree from the Media Studies Department / Turku University. She/they are also a fine artist working with audiovisual material and multispecies care. She/they conduct doctoral studies within Microbial lives: Practices of New Human-Microbial Cultures. Riina's interest in microbial social sciences has emerged from cultural animal studies and subsides in relational and new materialist ontologies. The thesis will study humans as holobionts from the gut-brain axis point of view, looking at how microbes think, feel, and behave with humans. The study focuses on the vagus nerve, which is investigated as the central signaling pathway between gut microbiota and the brain.
