Saana Hokkanen is a doctoral researcher at the Global Development Studies discipline, University of Helsinki. Her current research focuses on agricultural politics, political ontology and multispecies relationality in the context of Europe. She is particularly interested in the production of multispecies invisibility and disregard in industrial forms of farming and contemporary agricultural politics. She has previously worked in research projects on the political economies of deforestation and on the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of global extractivisms. Her recent publications include articles “Soil extractivism: Political ontology of soil erasure in the European Union’s agricultural politics”, published in the Journal of Rural Studies, and “From extractivism to global extractivism: the evolution of an organizing concept” published in the Journal of Peasant Studies. Outside of academic work Saana explores multispecies life and the microbial through gardening, cooking, and ceramics.
